What do you see with IAS?

The ultrasound probe is placed on the abdomen and the image is shown. The abdominal muscles — the rectus abdominus, the obliques and the transversus abdominus are identified.

The three layers of the thin muscles of the abdominal wall are shown as white lines on the image. The white lines are the fascial sheaths (almost like plastic wrap) that enclose each muscle. The depth of muscle is shown and the corset-like effect of the transversus muscle wrapping around the body is shown.

Real time imaging of the abdominal muscles being contracted is displayed and explained to the client who then learns subtle variations in the way the mind controls the small movements, until the most appropriate use of the corset muscle is obtained.

The client is asked to reproduce the contractions without watching the image to ensure that they can reproduce the abdominal control by muscle memory.

What is The Physioworks IAS Package?

This package is designed to teach the Core Stability concept to the sufferers of low back pain, or to people who realise that weakness of their abdominal muscles may lead to back pain in the future.

The IAS package involves two sessions with a physiotherapist. The initial one hour session involves a history taking and assessment of the low back, explanation of the concept and imaging of the abdominal muscles discussed above. Techniques are taught to use the muscles appropriately and exercises are set that are tailored to the findings.

The second half hour session is very important as it will show the physiotherapist how much of the information was retained by the client. The abdominal muscles will be retested - not looking for a change in strength, as this is too early - but looking for the quality the muscle use.

If the client is able to reproduce perfectly the right contraction - they are encouraged to exercise specifically and regularly the corset muscle. Support from the physiotherapist can be offered as necessary.

Poor results indicate that the client may require further input from the physiotherapist.

What are the benefits of The Physioworks IAS Package?

This package provides the low back pain sufferer with an overview of core stability, and, if the exercises are followed, improvement in abdominal strength and posture. These factors are important in the reduction of low back pain, and can also help to prevent back pain in the future.

IAS helps by putting some of the tools for the reduction and prevention of back pain back into the hands of the low back pain sufferer themselves!
